Ghana: "A Dollar a Day Makes the Phones OKAY"

The mobile phone has revolutionized rural areas in Africa. Still, around 600 mill people have no access to electricity at home for charging their phones. As a result, many people walk long distances to have their phones charged.

This project makes electricity available for charging phones in off-grid communities at an affordable price.

Nigeria, Sustainable Business and Community Development

A distillery based on fire wood and diesel fired boilers needed upgrading to be able to compete. As the community is off-grid, it was decided to build a “lighthouse” plant that can demonstrate how local bio-and plastic waste can be utilized via renewable energy technology to benefit the distillery and the local community, promoting Sustainable Development.

Sustainable Development in Rural Communities

A concept combining sustainable energy technologies, entrepreneurship training and market development

Sustainable Development is hampered in several ways in many rural communities today:

  • The lack of access to electricity, preventing e.g. access to efficient tools and information.
  • The traditional way of cooking meals over open fire, causing e.g. huge health problems due to the smoke, and contributes to deforestation.
  • The limited use of fertilizers, make farming inefficient and contribute to deforestation

This concept utilizes local resources for producing cooking gas, electricity, fuel and fertilizers. In addition, it includes training in Sustainable Energy and in entrepreneurship, thus promoting self sufficiency and Sustainable Development.

Clean Cookstoves and Bio-Plastic Pellets Production

A concept to enhance sustainable energy and plastic recycling

1. Almost 40% of the pupulation in the world rely on food being cooked on open fire, causing premature deaths of almost 4 million people annually. In addition, the practice contributes to deforestation.

2. In many countries, plastic waste pollutes streets, backyards and farmland, as well as water resources, harming life and impacting food chains.

In this concept we utilize bio and plastic wastes for producing a highly potent fuel to replace traditional fuels for cooking. The fuel will be used in clean cookstoves, replacing traditional solutions for cooking.

Waste and Solar Energy for Hotels

A concept for making off-grid hotels self sufficient with sustainable energy

Many off-grid hotels spend huge amount of money on diesel and generators, making the operation very expensive.

In this concept, the waste production at the hotel is utilized for making cooking gas, electricity, hot water, charcoal and fertilizers. In addition, Solar energy is utilized to make power and/or hot water.

The concept will contribute to make the hotel self sufficient with energy, and also make significant savings, in addition to solving waste problems.

Waste to Energy for Food Producers

A concept for making food producers self sufficient with sustainable energy

Food producers often struggle with huge amounts of organic waste from the production. Such waste could be olive stones and cake, palm trees, wood chips, waste from the production of fruit juice, cocoa shells, rice husks etc.

Without proper treatment the waste often pose a threat of pollution to the ground water as well as a source of smell and greenhouse gas emissions. Proper treatment, on the other side, is often expensive, if available at all. If not available, the collected waste will only be dumped at the nearest site, adding to the already existing environmental problems related to the site.

Such waste may instead be regarded as resources, as they are often well suited for the production of energy and/or fertilizers, while being properly processed as waste. A ton of organic waste per hour could represent a MW of power!

This concept will contribute to solve waste, pollution, fuel, gas and/or power problems and replace expensive fossil fuels and gas. The project may also contribute to better health and to the fight against climate change.

House of Energy and Entrepreneurship

A concept combining sustainable energy demonstration and training, as well as entrepreneurship training

Unemployment is a great problem in many countries, and so is the lack of knowledge of Sustainable Energy (SE). Although

SE is vital to Sustainable Development and creation of jobs, it is not sufficient. Another vital element is the ability to create business from opportunities.

In this concept, we combine SE and entrepreneurship in one house, and thus enhance knowledge of and training in both. The house thus serves as a demonstration house for products and solutions related to SE, as well as a training centre.

The House is expected to stimulate entrepreneurship and the use of sustainable energy, thereby contribute to job creation, less pollution, better health, improved farming, more efficient energy, and less deforestation and thus contribute against climate change. As a long term impact, it is expected to contribute to develop the community in a sustainable way.
